In January 2014, Bill Oates was named the Chief Information Officer for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. In that role, he is responsible for establishing the Commonwealth’s IT strategy, setting IT technology standards and approving secretariat/department IT plans. Prior to his appointment as the CCIO, Bill served as the first Cabinet level CIO for the City of Boston, Massachusetts. Under Bill’s leadership, the City of Boston transformed the way the city used technology to better engage with constituents. Appointed to that position in 2006 by Mayor Thomas M. Menino, Oates spearheaded the City’s technology initiatives and was responsible for the delivery of IT services in support of the various city functions
